Located in Dalian, Liaoning province, the 200MW/800MWh vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) energy storage plant is the largest facility of its kind in the world. Developed by Dalian Rongke Power (Rongke Power), it began grid operation in phases from 2022, with full capacity reached in subsequent commissioning stages.

The project anchors China's push into long-duration energy storage, pairing a 200MW output with 800MWh of duration — four hours at rated power — designed to support peak load shifting, renewable curtailment reduction, and grid frequency services.

Why Vanadium Flow

Unlike lithium-ion systems, VRFB plants decouple power and energy: the electrolyte is stored in external tanks, so additional duration can be added without changing cell stacks. The Dalian facility uses vanadium electrolytes that are inherently non-flammable and can cycle for decades with minimal degradation.
